Parents who use medication to treat their children would probably be interested in learning about this survey. A survey instrument was formulated and dispatched to a nationwide cohort of child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAPs), child neurologists (CNs), and developmental-behavioral pediatricians (DBPs) across the United States. Alongside presenting descriptive statistics, the study employed multivariable regressions, including log-binomial and ordinal logistic analyses, to discern variations among subspecialists.

The participants chosen for the survey were individuals with expected expertise in prescribing stimulant medication for children. The final cohort comprised 826 physicians actively engaged in prescribing stimulants. Surprisingly, only 48% of these physicians reported having received formal training on prescription drug diversion (PDD) during their medical school, residency, and/or fellowship.

The presented information indicates that despite the targeted expertise of the surveyed physicians in prescribing stimulant medication for children, a notable proportion—specifically 48%—reported a lack of formal training regarding prescription drug diversion (PDD) during their medical education, including medical school, residency, and/or fellowship. This suggests a potential gap in training and awareness among a significant portion of healthcare professionals who play a role in prescribing stimulant medications for children. The findings highlight an area where improvements in training and education may be beneficial to ensure that healthcare providers are well-equipped to address issues related to prescription drug diversion in their practice.
